The
TD5 Tuning Process
Before
we even start the tuning process, it is important for us to get an idea
of how your car is driven, what the mileage and service record is like,
and where you feel the engine's shortfalls are? We would carry out an engine
diagnostic check, to ensure that all engine systems are running correctly,
and that there are no unusual fault codes stored in the ECU's memory. Once
we've done this, the tuning can begin!
One
of the things that makes us so unique, is that all our remapping is done
'on the road', so we can easily gauge engine response under a number of
real world tests, and make adjustments where necessary as we drive, until
we have a final version that we are all completely happy with. We have the capability to 'live map' your car, actually making adjustments while on the move, ensuring the best possible results.
Smoke emissions
and Exhaust Gas Temperatures are always taken into consideration, so we
can ensure your engine will not be over stressed at any point, and so maintaining
the highest levels of reliability. Rolling road dynamometer testing can
never simulate these driving conditions in quite the same way, as they are
only really good for measuring power and torque.
Although
all our tuning is unique, it can generally be broken into various 'stages'
of tune, each giving it's own leap in power and torque as the stages increase.
The Stage 1 tune usually consists of an engine ECU
remap only. This option is most suited to those who just want a nicer, more
relaxing car to drive, while improving fuel economy. This makes the car
noticeably quicker throughout the entire rpm range, but most apparent is
the huge increase in low end and mid range torque available. This is especially
welcome to those that use their Td5 for towing.
For
those who want more, there is the Stage 2 tune.
This involves the fitting of a full size intercooler to take power and torque
to the next level. It is also recommended to increase turbo boost pressure,
so as to take advantage of the more efficient intercooler. As this will
allow more air (oxygen) to enter the engine, we would also further increase
the mapping to take advantage of the increased oxygen content, and hence
produce a more powerful tune.
Stage
1 tuning (Remap only) will typically raise
power to about 150 -155 bhp, with torque in excess of 350Nm.
Stage
2 tuning (Remap, Intercooler,
Boost Upgrade) will take this further and push power up to about 170 - 180 bhp, with torque of around 400Nm being attainable.
Want
more? The stage 2 conversion mated with the rest of our tuning products,
including our Hybrid Turbo, will give the ultimate Td5 experience, delivering
well over 210bhp and approx 450Nm!
Although
the above quoted figures may look very impressive, the focus of our tuning
is very much on drivability, and smooth power delivery. Many people can
make big power with these engines, but the real benefit with our tuning
is in the way it's delivered, and that's the Td5 Alive difference!
We would never sell a generic ready made (5 minute) 'Download'
remap, or a generic remapped chip! There is absolutely no way that
this kind of tuning can realise the full potential of a mass produced engine. Don't accept anything less than a true custom remap, made
to suit your requirements!
Td5 Tuning By Post.
We
can reprogram any TD5 engine ecu by post. As long as your Td5 is in good
working order, we can tune your ecu here, while your car is still parked
on your drive! Obviously, we cannot maximise your engine's tuning potential
in this way, so this postal service gives a conservative mapping that
is unique to your needs, based on the intended use of your vehicle. The
result will be much better throttle response, better mpg, and a significant
increase in engine smoothness, power and torque, but without the smoke!
For
UK customers, simply send us your engine ecu by Royal Mail Special Delivery
(1pm service). This should cost no more than £10 for mainland United
Kingdom, and Northern Ireland. We will read off your current fuel maps,
modify them, and write the new modified tune onto your ecu as soon as
we receive it, and then send it straight back to you, same day!
For example, If you sent us
your ecu on Monday afternoon, we would receive it Tuesday morning, reprogram
it, and then post it back to you so you would receive it Wednesday morning!

Td5 Tuning with Nanocom.
TD5Alive
have teamed up with Nanocom,
to produce a unique, vehicle specific tuning solution that will allow
us to create a custom tuned remap for any Td5, anywhere in the world! All you need
is a Flashable (NNN type) Td5 engine ECU, a Nanocom diagnostic system, and an internet connection. This tuning
method requires you to send us your original nanocom map file, from
your car's engine ecu, so it can be modified to best suit your engine
and your country's climate. When you recieve your tuned file, apply
it to your engine ecu and road test it for several miles, looking for
smoke and harshness. You then report back to us with any problems, and
at what rpm they occur, and we will adjust your tuning until we get
it just right. Because this system does not tie up so much of our time,
we can offer this custom tuning for a lot less. The Nanocom diagnostic
system only costs about £200+vat, and is available from
the Nanocom website.
